Some lessons are harder to learn than others. Such as...some pieces of furniture just aren't worth the trouble, even the really neat looking ones. :-( When I first saw this vanity/dresser set at the local flea market back in March I just loved them!
I had planned to sand them down, re-stain them or paint them, and put on new knobs. I just KNEW that they were going to look great when I was done with them. However, God had greater plans :-) Shortly after the purchase of these I found out I was pregnant and therefore couldn't do all of the work that these pieces would require. I also couldn't seem to move from the couch! ha! Now that I'm feeling better and getting ready to move I planned on taking these pieces up to Dallas with me to have my mom help me fix and paint them. Sadly, I started looking at the vanity and realized that there was some sort of vernier or particle board covering the original wood. SUPER. I figured I could just peel that off.
As I started I realized that this stuff was not going ANYWHERE. Now I started to get pretty bummed out, especially when I saw that it was peeling at other places too.
At first I thought that I could strip the vernier off and then just sand and stain the wood underneath. Simple enough...except that the damage the real wood was taking while removing the vernier wasn't going to work out well in the end. I finally decided that this piece of furniture just wasn't for me and decided to let it go :-(.
I was afraid that my unique dresser was going to have the same fate...I went and checked it out and realized that it too was covered in vernier, and was in worse shape than the vanity. So, I've made my peace with these pieces of furniture...I donated them today. :-( I bought a pair of lemons and I just have to move on. *Sigh* All in all, I've re-done several pieces of furniture and this was my first bad experience. I am just going to learn from my mistakes and move on!
In life, sometimes you just have to grin and bear it :-)
