Addition: Hi y'all! I just have to say WOW, I can't believe the traffic that this post has been getting from pinterest, other bloggers, home improvement sites, and even personal recomendations. Thank you to everyone who has commented or emailed about this post. I just have a few things I should add.
- I don't clean my sink like this every day...this is for when I have a really dirty sink and it needs a good deep clean. When I just want a standard clean I just use vinegar and baking soda with boiling water to rinse it off.
- This specific way to shine my sink was used after I had painted several rooms and rinsed dirty brushes in my kitchen sink. So there were paint splatters everywhere, hence the use of goo gone. It just really cut through the grime better than anything else.
- I clean in a almost all "green" way, and I'm not bothered by the use of goo-gone. My daughter doesn't eat out of this sink, so it doesn't bother me.
- To everyone who has a different cleaning method. That is awesome, and thanks for sharing your ideas.
So if you're the owner of a stainless sink {or any sink for that matter!} you know they can get pretty dingy. Spraying your sink with a cleaner may seem like it cuts into the dirt and grime but it just doesn't. I have been searching for a cleaning method that will really make my stainless sink shine. After talking with my mom a few days ago I came up with a great solution.

Supplies
- Vinegar {In a spray bottle}
- Baking Soda
- Boiling Water
- Goo-Gone
- Olive Oil
- Sponge
- Paper Towels or Rag
Directions
1. Spray entire sink down with vinegar.
2. Sprinkle baking soda over entire sink.
3. Let sit for 10 minutes.
4. Boil hot water while letting vinegar/baking soda sit.
5. Rinse sink with boiling water.
6. Spray some more vinegar onto sink and scrub away.
7. Once you have scrubbed every nook and cranny of your sink wipe it down with a paper towel.
8. Then spray some goo gone in the sink and wipe down the sink.
9. After that put a little bit of olive oil onto a paper towel {or rag} and "buff" your sink. That's what I thought of this step. It really renews the shine to your sink.
I LOVE this sink cleaning system, I only wish I had taken a before picture! I can happily report that after I did this this morning I used my sink all day long. I washed dishes, my hands, drained pasta, and dumped out tomato sauce into my sink. Once I was done with it for the night I simply wiped it down and it looked as good as new. I'm going to be working this into my weekly cleaning schedule for sure!

I've needed to do this for a LONG time! I just haven't been cleaning like I should.
Thanks for this great tip. I will be trying this VERY soon!!
Good to know! I have stainless steel sinks in the kitchen too. This seems like a great cleaning method.
Doesn't the goo gone stink stick? It seems like not enough steps after the goo gone to make me want to put my food and dishes in there? Or maybe I'm just paranoid about its toxicity?
This worked great! I had to make a couple of changes, and it still looks amazing. I didn't have Goo Gone so I used Lemon Oil (not the essential oil, but the cleaning kind for wood, etc). And for the scrub with vinegar, I didn't feel like the sink was coming clean enough, and there were still the little scratches/marks. I used "Bar Keepers Friend", and it is wonderful. It doesn't scratch the stainless, but marks that I didn't think would come off, did. Thank you so much! My sink looks awesome...now I don't want anyone to eat or touch it at all! :)
Worked wonderfully! Thanks for the tip! I didn't even have to buff..the goo gone made it shine like new!
I have one of those cheap stainless steel sinks you often see in apartments. I needed to do this for a while. I was grossed out by how much gunk was coming off when I got to the scrubbing part. The gunk was literally like a fine layer of car grease that I never saw! I am no longer a fan if commercial stainless steel cleaners...what a waste of money. I will be using this method from now on. My sink looks amazing! Thank you!
The only thing I might suggest if you have a sink like mine, is to use a sponge that has a scouring pad side. Makes the scrubbing easier :)
My husband is a killer sink shiner. What we've learned over the years is the quality of the sink and finish has a lot to do with it. Some sinks will never shine like this because of the initial finish they are made with and a lot of your sinks sold at the big boxes are like that. Make sure when you buy a sink to get the "mirror" type finish. It will make shining much easier as that is what it does naturally.
Great idea! Will be trying this tomorrow :)

Thanks for sharing. I have never even thought about trying to make my sink shine but now I am going to have to and I will definitely be proud!
And the baking soda/vinegar/boiling water is good for clearing the drains, too!
I saw this on Pinterest, really great tip...repinning!
I've tried many methods, but never got the shiny look from the picture. Hopefully, the one you've shared will be more effective. I will try it tonight :) Thank you for giving us this valuable information! In exchange I want to offer you tips on how to clean leather furniture.
Hi i`m from Venezuela. Can you explain me, what's goo gone? So i can look for something similar here in my country. Thanks
http://googone.com/
WD-40 is pretty amazing on stainless too!
um.....there is a super easy way to do this as well. It's not as "green" though. Squirt liquid dishwasher detergent into sink, use scrub brush to spread all over the sink, let sit for at least a few minutes (depending on results wanted) use brush and water to rinse back off. Shiny, clean, and stain free! This also works for stained counter tops :)
I posted a comment to this project from my iPhone, but it has not shown up yet....so if this gets posted twice, I apologize!
I just finished this project....and my sink looks great! I used the steps as Mallorie had them written. My sink looked really great after the vinegar and baking soda scrub, but because the boiling water "opened the pores" of the stainless the GooGone really got to the deep dirt! I agree with one comment above, the original finish of the sink will make a difference on the final outcome....but no matter what your sink will look great! Thanks Mallorie!
I just did this as well and my sink looks great. I live in a townhouse built in 1985. I'm not sure if this is the original sink it not buy it was definitely looking dingy. It looked great by the time I was done. There were a few deep scratches I couldn't get out but that's to he expected. For me the "big cleaning" phase was reapplying the vinegar and scrubbing with a Scotch Bright scrubber (green/yellow one meant to go in the reusuable handles). I could really see te junk come off then and the goo gone and olive oil made it shine. I will definitely do this again before company comes over. In the meantime, I may try just applying vinegar and giving it a good scrub every few weeks since the hole process can take a little time. Thanks for sharing this tip!
I definitely plan on trying this out!
I wonder of you can.use this on.your drip pans from the stovetop range
WOW!
My problem is hard water. No matter how much I clean it leaves the water spots. Guess the secret is to buff dry every time. I will try tho. Been keeping a shaker bottle of baking soda next to my sink for months now and use it to clean often instead of comet. Love baking soda!!
an easy cheap fix for hard water, go to a dollar store and get any of the toilet bowl cleaners (liquid). put some on the effected area, and let sit for a minute. It should take minimal scrubbing and look wonderful. Be sure to rinse. This also works on soap scum in the bathtub/shower. Just be sure to rinse. I learned this from a friend who owns a commercial cleaning business.
Wow, it's amazing and great! I would apply that tip to shine my kitchen sink. Cleaning Service
I like how the sink looks sleek and blemish-free. In my situation, I use either baking soda and vinegar or olive oil when I’m cleaning my stainless steel sink. After reading your post, I might try all of those ingredients in a single cleaning. :D

Four years ago we had our house built. It was the first stainless steel sink I had ever used (we had porcelain in the other house). To keep it shiny and new wipe it down completely dry after use! Works like a charm!
weekly cleaning routine? I envy you your youth and good health, however I shall try this - it is my strainers that are gross! Do you think I could eliminate the goo gone?

weekly cleaning routine? Oh to be young and healthy. I to am a little weary of the goo gone strp. May try omitting that product.
Just use Barkeeper's Friend.
Just a thought... not sure if I want any part of goo-gone, or WD40 in my sink! My kitties go in there and drink from the faucet, and there are a lot of chemicals in those two things.
Before, my mom planned to replace our old kitchen sink because you can really see a lot of scratches in it and it doesn’t look good, really. But before we went on with that plan, we just tried some of the quick and easy ways to make your sink spotless, and guess what? It worked! The vinegar and the baking soda were really a savior! Haha!

I use Barkeeper's Friend all the time to keep my undermount kitchen sink looking like new. But I like the DIY recipe of your suggestion. Thanks!
All you need is Ajax and a little elbow grease.
I read somewhere,.can't remember, that you can mix 1 part oil, 2 parts baking soda to make your own goo gone :) I already scrub with vinegar but the oil makes it shine!
If you want to unclog your drain, you can use the same items but just remove the olive oil and the Goo-gone. Use the same process and do it over and over again. In no time, your drain will be unclogged and as good as new! I always do this every end of the month just to make sure I won't experience any clogged drains. Try this one too! :)

Found this idea on Pinterest. I tried it and my sink looks almost new! Thanks!
After all the cleaning is done use turle wax from the car detailing section and it just helps with any water spots!!! Great on faucets as well!!!

I saw this post on pinterest. A lot of thanks for sharing with us great tips, i must follow them..:)
Chemicals
I use orange oil instead of goo gone. I also use it on stainless steel appliances. The one thing I've found about using olive oil is that it will leave a sticky residue where the orange oil does not.
When your sink is clean, try wiping it with Mineral Oil each day. Puts on a nice shine and keeps stains from sticking.
Just did this....I get the same results with a sponge, Comet powder, & paper towels with a lot less time & effort.
Purchase new strainers!

We live in Arizona and the water is SO HARD. I put in a new Kohler Stainless Steel sink in January and was so disappointed that every time I ran the water - SPOTS! Read that you should use Mineral Oil, which I did but still the spots. Went to my hairdresser and was telling her how bummed I was and she told me to start using Pledge Lemon spray, which I did and I couldn't be happier.
The reaction of vinegar with baking soda will evolve a fair amount of carbon dioxide gas (that is why is fizzes and bubbles), as do all acid-base reactions. Small amounts of carbon dioxide is fine to health, but inhalation of the fumes should be avoided. You should really issue a small disclaimer with this post.
I tried to clean with caution (wore a mask, opened the windows, used a fan and an air purifier), but still managed to get a terrible headache.
You can read about the effects of CO2 here: http://www.livestrong.com/article/218581-the-effects-of-inhaling-carbon-dioxide-gas/
Stay well.
Great idea, i must follow your tricks...
Laundry Chemicals
I agree with you. I'd skip the goo gone.
I just did this and my sink is shining. The only thing is there are these little rust spots snd i can still see scratches. But all in all super clean.
These sounds really a cool way of maintaining the stailnless steel kitchen counters at your home.
Tray & Rack Dispensers
I know some of the things you used but not all, as in the uk and never heard of goo gone and some other things.
Loved this! !! Works awesome!!
PLEASE don't use GOO GONE (or anything similarly chemical based) on your sink. It's not intended for use on anything that might come in contact with utensils/food (danger of cross contamination).
I really like how your class timings of your blog. I enjoyed reading your blog and it is both instructional and interesting. Thanks!
Commercial Cleaning>
I just tried your steps and must say that my old sink looks almost new again - don't quite understand the "goo gone" step, though. Anyway, my sink is so pretty that I don't want anyone to use it! The "fam" says thanx!
Lowe's sells bar keepers friend. Snd other great green cleaning items.
Not sure I'd want my kitties in/near the same sink as my dishes. I think the chemicals would end up being the least of my worries.
I am a sink nazi!!! lol! I clean mine with Bar Keepers Friend when I don't have ZUD - they are very similar. Rinse and then polish with Mother's Choice Household cleaner and a plastic scrubber. It is organic biodegradable and non toxic. Rinse with warm water and dry.... shiny water pebbling finish!
This is EXACTLY why I would never ever buy so called stainless steel anything.
I have always used soft scrub! So easy and leaves it looking fabulous!
Definitely easier than this!
Thank you so much for sharing! I tried out your method on my blog, Tried & Twisted, and gave you credit for the idea. Thanks!

I use a chrome polish/protector for car, it rips the dirt right out of the fine grooves and then keeps it shiney for nearly 6 months
I have always used Ajax, Comet or SOS Pads on my stainless steel sinks and appliances, they always come out nice and shiny, it seems like a lot of work for the same result.
I use gel gloss on mine.
We use BKF on our stainless pots & pans and it does a remarkable job! We found it at Wal-Mart. I had no idea it was at Family Dollar, too! Thanks for sharing!

Try lemon, squeeze it onto stainless steel surfaces.

Goo Gone is made of mostly Kerosene and therefore extremely flammable!! beware when using in kitchen! I use a product called Motsenbockers Lift Off #2 Sticky Greasy Oily stain remover. It works better is water based so better for kids pets and the environment. you can buy it at most hardware stores.
Thanks for the post and information sharing with all. Our organization also help to remove strains from house or offices.
Stainless Steel Cleaning
I scrub with Comet and then shine it up with the aerosol glass cleaner. Shines like a new penny!
Thanks for the information on googone. I was wondering what could be used in the place of the toxins in goo gone.
What. Could be used in place of the toxic chemicals in GooGone?
If anyone wants to poison themselves, go ahead and use Goo gone. It's way more toxic than Comet which works way easier than that whole rigamarole with the vinegar etc. Here is a site with the ingredients in Goo Gone http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/household/brands?tbl=brands&id=13009002
Barkeepers Friend works very well also
What about using Coconut oil instead of googone? It's going to get buffed out, so who knows? I for real am not, will not polish my sink every day. Buff it? puff it? nope. One time is good, and then again for when it looks bad.
Does anybody know of any metal suppliers in Calgary?
There are two similar techniques which do not require Goo-Gone -
www.savvysugar.com/How-Clean-Your-Stainless-Steel-Sink-30688216
www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-clean-yo-2-136771
I don't understand why olive oil is required - can't one just use vegetable or canola oil?
And to chelleshock32 - the most effective way to clean your stove drip pans is with oven cleaner - i just set them on the oven racks and spray the pans, racks and oven all at the same time (otherwise it would be very messy and might damage another surface if you placed them in your sink, for example. Elbow grease and a soapy steel wool pad, like S.O.S. works almost as well.
Nice post.. I was searching for cleaning product or method for sink cleaning of my kitchen,. Finally got such a wonderful post.

I just discovered a super easy method to shine up stainless steel like new with one thing--I tried one of those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers to wipe down my sink and it shined like new!! It was SO easy and I was super impressed.
Thank you! What is goo-gone ? I clean the sinks just with a vinegar :)
I think the oil finish will go a long way towards repelling the hard water minerals!
Great post.. I am trying to clean sink but without perfect results.. Surely I will try your way of cleaning now.

I moved in with my 91 year old father who still lives in the home I grew up in. I don't think the sink ever shined as beautifully as yours. (I was six when we moved here and the sink was brand new, so maybe it was beautiful then, I don't know)
I'm going to try your method. I think if I got the sink to look like that, it would make my dad smile big. He was a sheet metal man by trade and stainless was always a big thing to him. Thanks for sharing!
Googone has made the entire house stink all day. I will skip that step next time! Bar keeper's friend does just as good of a job with less effort.
I have used hand sanitizer on stainless to make it shine... I think it was a Martha Stewart tip. Works well.

Another great method: Spray sink with OVEN CLEANER, allow to stand for 15 or more minutes (more if this is the first deep clean). Rinse, scrub with cleanser. Oil/grime will come out of all crevices and the imprinted words around your drain. I wash sink with dish detergent to remove cleanser residue and then use spray stainless polish. A must try!
You can also finish it with baby oil or WD40..Me and my hubby are cleaners for the military and it works wonders and makes them look sooooooo beautiful!

What a great technique! I have a lot of stainless steel in my kitchen, and this tip will serve me well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! http://www.acklandstainless.com.au
Most teachers use Goo Gone because it removes sticky tape, maker and pen marks. If I use it on my sink, I would use it first, then rinse well and use the vinegar and baking soda afterwards. The scolding hot water would rinse the Goo Gone away. I would not use it without cleaning the sink afterwards with the vinegar and baking soda.
I've cleaned my sink like this about 4 or 5 times now and it is absolutely amazing!
I have learned to be careful with the goo gone around my faucet because it did take some of the finish/shine off of it the first time I cleaned my sink this way. I'm guessing that my faucet is made from another material made to look like stainless steel and that's why it lost some finish. Now I always make sure to rinse my entire faucet with water after I use this cleaning method. Then I buff it with a dish cloth and it looks as shiny as my sink!
Other than that one small mishap with the faucet this has worked awesome for me!
I'm about to get a stainless steel kitchen, I thought it would look really great with wood cabinets. I just found out while reading your blog, it seems you have to clean it a lot. Is it hard to clean? Or will I be fine. I can't wait to see how it goes. http://www.acklandstainless.com.au

Yeah, poisonous chemicals are always better to ingest vs having a cat drink from your faucet. Sounds legit. I wouldn't want to eat at your house Lol
Yeah Melody cause the cat litter that cats drag around on their paws is so much better. You clean and prepare food around and in the sink. A cat near that is definitely not safe in that situation. These chemicals are not poisonous if you use olive oil instead of goo gone. Don't jump on someone unless you are c willing to see both sides of the a argument.
Seems too much bother.
I use one product, Gumption, done is a snap and looks fantastic. I Use it all over the place.

how do i clean stainless steel
Instead of goo-gone any substitute of it cause it's not in my country....
Someone mentioned this in 2012 and I don't feel as though it got sufficient notice, so I'd like to repeat and elevate. I retired as a kitchen design professional with thirty years experience, ten of which were in a big box environment. I was selling granite counter tops with under mount sinks before they were priced for "everyman." All stainless steel sinks are not the same!! There are differences in gauge, differences in color, and yes, differences in finish. Most stainless steel sink manufacturers in the US don't even offer a finish option on a special order sink, and I've never even seen anything but a matte finish in-stock in a big box store, under mount OR top mount. So some of you might polish your way all the way through to the other side of your sink wall, creating a hole but never find a shiny spot from the inside of the metal to the outside.
I have been trying for a long time to find something to clean my stainless steel kitchen sink. Thankyou, I will try it after I finish on the computer. Do you have something to clean fiberglass shower enclosures and fiberglass sinks? I think it turns yellowish and wonder how to get these out. I really don't know if it my eyes or not but it does bother me although I have used steam (which is time consuming but seems to help) but even comet with bleach doesn't help. I'll try this with my bathroom sink today also but I wondered if you have a different idea. Thanks
Wonderful Technique! We'll be sure to pass this along!

When thinking about http://www.faucetsmarket.com/bathroom-accessory-bathroom-mirrors-c-4_5.html we need to remember that the bathroom, as we know it, is still relatively new. Before 1870, Victorians would slide into a hip Kitchen faucet in front of the fire. These shallow Antique brass faucet were curved up the back making a comfortable rest and were made of iron or zinc, usually painted dark brown on the outside and cream or marbled on the inside. http://www.faucetsmarket.com/
Bar Keepers Friend is AWESOME! I have been using it for over 50 years and it works great!
Better living thru chemistry. GooGone, WD-40, Oven cleaner..... NOT!!!
I have used Barkeeper's Friend. If you can't find that you can also use Bon Ami. Found in grocery stores/Walmart.
